Active Beam-Steering Antennas & Metasurfaces

Active beam-steering solutions enable real-time control of beam direction and coverage without mechanical movement. Smart Sensum develops two types of active beam-steering technologies:

  1. Antenna systems based on metasurfaces, where the beam is steered to different directions in space. These antenna systems are cost-effective and do not rely on conventional phase shifters. Depending on the application, they can be delivered in compact or low-profile form factors.
  2. Scanning programmable metasurfaces, where a surface is illuminated by an external source and configured to redirect the incident electromagnetic wave toward a desired direction. These surfaces can be used to enhance coverage and signal quality and are applicable to emerging communication systems, including 6G.

Unlike a conventional metal plate, where reflection follows Snell’s law, a programmable scanning metasurface enables control over the scattered wavefront. This allows steering of the reflected or transmitted energy to different angles, including configurations where the scattered wave is directed in the same direction as the incident wave, which is not possible with a conventional metal plate.
